How do I apply for a grant from KAF?
Individuals and arts organizations devoted to supporting KAF’s mission may apply for a grant from KAF. Having recently received IRS approval of KAF as a public charity, KAF is in the process of refining and adapting the grant process. 4.
Do donations to KAF qualify as charitable deductions on my income taxes?
Yes
5.
What is the difference between a public charity and a private foundation?
The IRS has determined that KAF is a public charity which is advantageous to donors. All organizations that qualify under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code are either private foundations or public charities. Because KAF is a public charity, donations to KAF are not subject to certain limitations imposed on contributions to private foundations.
6.
What is an endowment fund?
An endowment fund is a fund held by a charitable organization in which the donor or the organization has imposed or adopted a restriction that prohibits some or all of the funds held by the public charity from being spent currently. This would include, for example, a gift that is to be held "in perpetuity" in which case only the income derived from the gift could be distributed by the public charity. KAF believes the primary benefit of the creation of an endowment fund to support Kansas arts is that as an endowment fund provides financial security in the future and assures that regardless of economic times or shrinking appropriations, money will always be available to Kansas arts.
7.
Who is in charge of funds donated to KAF?
The Trust Company of Manhattan serves as Custodian of funds for the Kansas Arts Foundation. In general, the Board of Directors of KAF must perform their duties, including the management of donations and the endowment fund, which includes investment duties, with the care an ordinarily prudent person in a like position would exercise under similar circumstances.
8.
How are directors selected to serve on the KAF Board of Directors?
The KAF was incorporated as a not for profit corporation in the State of Kansas. In accordance with its Articles of Incorporation, the KAF Board of Directors is composed of directors selected by nomination and approved by the entire Board of Directors. Directors’ terms are limited and staggered to assure that the KAF Board of Directors remains diverse, vigorous and encompasses a broad range of arts interests.
